   CARAT

Larger diamonds are found in nature much less frequently which, in turn, makes them more valuable. A three-carat diamond is always more expensive than several diamonds which add up to three carats. Most people compare carat weight to size. The larger the diamond the more it weighs. The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. The word carat originated from the carob tree. The tiny seeds of this tree are well known for their uniformity and consistent weight. Traditionally diamonds and gemstones were weighed against these seeds until the system was standardized, and one carat was fixed at 0.2 grams. One carat is divided into 100 points. A diamond weighing one quarter of a carat can also be described as weighing 25 points or 0.25 carats.

   CLARITY

Clarity refers to imperfections in the diamond. Lack of imperfections raise the cost of the diamond where as visible inclusions lower the cost. Almost all diamonds contain very tiny natural birthmarks known as inclusions. To determine a diamonds clarity, an expert views it under 10 power magnification. In addition to internal inclusions, surface irregularities are referred to as blemishes. These two categories of imperfections-inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) make up clarity. The fewer the imperfections, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. Many inclusions are not discernible to the naked eye and require magnification to become apparent. Contrary to popular belief, higher clarity does not always mean more beautiful. If the inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, a higher clarity does not really improve the appearance of a diamond but rather the rarity and price. A higher clarity is more desirable and valuable, but knowing that you have selected the right clarity for the right reasons is most important. We recommend a clarity of SI2 or better. Clarity is graded using a very precise and complex method of evaluating the size, location, and visibility of inclusions. The plotted inclusions may not be actual size for display purposes. Remember, the inclusions shown below are not visible to the average naked eye until the I1-I3 clarities.

   COLOR

The naked eye generally can not tell the difference between three color grades in a mounted diamond. This means you can buy an "F", "G", or "H" color diamond and not be able to see the difference. A colorless diamond is very rare and correspondingly expensive. Diamonds are evaluated according to an alphabetic scale and graded. Diamonds that are in the "D-F" range are considered colorless. Diamonds in the "G-J" range will show completely white from the top, but may show hints of color from the side. Diamonds that are "K" color or below will show a slight tint. We recommend diamonds that are color graded as "I" or better for engagement rings. Earrings need not be as high quality because anyone THAT close to your face probably isn't looking at your ears. It's also important to consider what color of gold you will be setting the stone in. A white gold or platinum mounting will by comparison make the yellow in a stone more visible, while a yellow gold mount will help disguise the natural color in a stone.

   Cut

One of the most important, and often neglected factors that will determine the beauty of your diamond. Ideal proportions will cause light to be refracted up through the face of the stone. A diamond that is either to deep, or too flat, will lose light through the sides-resulting in a diamond that appears less brilliant. We recommend either Very Good or Ideal cut diamonds.

Ideal Very Good Good Fair
